Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results.
SEO is important as it makes your website easy for both people and search engines to find you. Google uses ‘Crawlers’ such as ‘Googlebot’ to scan websites for links and information in the back end of your website, which it then uses to determine whether your site is relevant, popular or useful to people who are using specific seach words within Google.
Here are five simple SEO tips for getting more Google traffic to your website.
You’ve probably heard the saying that content is king. It’s important to write relevant and engaging content that your visitors want to read. Profile your target customers to find out what they are interested in, what issues they most care about and what problems they are most concerned with. Once you have an indepth profile you will be able to write content that you know your people will want to read and share.
Use Google’s Keyword Planner to find keywords that people are using within search engines about your preferred topic. Use these keywords within your post titles and within the first paragraph of your content to help your site and content rank highly within Google.
Google will now look at how often your site or content is mentioned on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter so ensure you add social media ‘share’ buttons to all of your posts and ask people to share your content.
Add metadata to all of your site pages. Metadata is the data that is generated when you view any data online. So for example, what the page/content is about – a title and description. Locate the metadata on your site, usually within the HTML area of the page, and add a good title and description. Writing a good description and title will encourage more people to click through to your site because it clearly tells people what’s on your page, drawing them to click on the link.
Create backlinks to your site. Back links are links you include in your content that directs people to other related websites and content. Make sure you link to high ranking websites as there is no point driving people to small redundant sites. The more activity Google sees coming to and from your website the more it recognises you as an established site and will lead to you ranking higher within searches.
