How to find your happiness

Everyone wants to be happy and we all have it within us, so why aren’t more of us happy more of the time? Research suggests that happiness is a combination of how satisfied we are with our lives and how good we feel on a day to day basis. We all have the ability to control how we feel yet many of us struggle with it. As a result, a billion dollar industry has been built around helping people to find their happiness, with self-help books, motivational speakers, therapists and happiness schools. They may offer you the tools to help you manage your life, but the truth is happiness can’t be found externally; it’s a frame of mind, a way of thinking. Control your mind and master your thoughts and you will be happy! Of course it takes a lot of practice and discipline to get into this state of being, but it is possible for you to feel happy and contented every single day starting now.

Below are 10 top tips to help you find your happiness.

ONE

Meditate and visualise every morning. Practice gratitude by spending a couple of minutes each morning saying ‘thank you’ for everything in your life that you’re grateful for. Once you’re in this state of gratitude, visualise your new life. Where are you? What do you look like? What are you doing? See it in detail. What does it feel like? When you open your eyes, live your life as though you were living that vision. Make believe – plan for it, act like it, feel like it.

TWO

Practice mastering your thoughts and feelings. What you think directly affects how you feel; if you think negative thoughts then you will feel bad as a consequence. Change your thoughts and you will change how you feel. Try to be conscious about what you say to yourself and if you find yourself saying bad or negative things, stop and acknowledge what you’re doing. This takes a lot of practice, but over a few weeks you will be able to master your thoughts. Another good tip is to distance yourself from your negative thoughts, as though it were a third person creating them; give it a silly name like Caca the angry mouse and imagine the thoughts in a silly squeaky tone, as this will help you to realise your negative thoughts are not to be taken seriously.

THREE

Live healthily. Eat cleanly and avoid consuming lots of processed foods, limit your alcohol intake, exercise every day (even it’s just a 20 minute brisk walk) and make sure you get enough sleep. If you’re in a relationship, having regular sex is also really important for boosting your mood and bringing you closer to your partner (you may not feel like it but it’s important to make the time and the effort and to fake it if need be).

FOUR

Trust in the Universe. Know that whatever happens in your life, everything will work out in the end.

FIVE

It’s easy to put off seeing friends or family because of your busy lifestyle, but it’s important to make time to connect with the people you care about. Take regular time out to catch up and do something fun and relaxing that you enjoy and that makes you happy, smile and laugh.

SIX

Take up a hobby or something that you enjoy doing just for you. We often put off doing what we love because life gets in the way, but the result is that we end up losing all of the passion from our lives. Reconnect with who you are and what makes you happy and do something just for the sake of doing it.

SEVEN

Be kind, loving and forgiving of yourself. Don’t be unnecessarily cruel and only say nice things to yourself and about yourself. Be your own best friend and think highly of yourself. You are wonderful and don’t think any different.

EIGHT

Help others. It’s a fact that when we stop focussing on ourselves and start caring about those around us, we feel happier.

NINE

Dress up and make an effort with your appearance. When you look good you feel good, you’ll walk taller and feel more confident and happier.

TEN

Take action. Stop thinking about all the things you want to do and just do them. If you want to lose weight do it. If you hate your job, find another one. If you are unhappy in your relationship, find a way to leave. Only you can make things happen in your life, so you can either wish and dream and let your life pass you by without taking action, or you get out there and make your dreams come true.
